Wall vase for junior badge      Glass Squares           Wheel pottery        Silver Jewelry
                                                    (can also be for badge)

Summary:
We now have 5 different media for the scouts to work in.  They are:

1.
Pottery painting:  appropriate for all ages, from $18 and up.  Takes 1 meeting of one
hour.  Pick up your project 1 week later as a group.

2.
Glass fusing:  appropriate for all ages, but best for Juniors, Cadets and Seniors.  From
$20 for a 3.5" x 3.5" square, for a suncatcher or coaster.  Or, we can make 2 pendants for
$20.  Here, we put a glass piece together and fire it, melting all the glass together.  Very
fun, and something different.  Takes 1 meeting of 1 hour, and for $15, we can mail the
pieces to the troop leader, or pickup about 7 days later.

3.
Clay:  Junior Girl Scout and the pottery badge.  This project is done by hand.   See
below.  $15 or $20, takes two meetings spaced 2 weeks apart, but we can do it one week
apart if we rush the drying.  The lesson takes 1 3/4 hours to complete with snack and
tour, subtract 30 minutes if you are just doing the lesson, and the second meeting takes
place about 2 weeks later and lasts one hour.

Clay:  For girls younger than Juniors that want to work in clay, we make name plaques,
small mirrors or garden stakes.  Cost is $15.

4.
Wheel pottery:  appropriate for Junior, Cadets or Senior girl scouts.  $30 a person,
includes 1.5 hour lesson, one piece of your handmade pottery, and glazing.  The lesson
takes 1.5 hours, and  2 weeks later you come back to finish the pottery.  If your troop is
larger than 8 girls, you get extra time, most often 2 hours.  We also had a troop with 28
girls and were successful in doing wheel pottery with them, so we can handle larger
troops.  We had them use the wheel and keep their piece and paint a plate, mug or bowl
for $30 a person, total price.  Please discuss this with Fired Up when making the
reservation.   We rotate the girls on and off the four wheels, and they enjoy watching their
friends.  Encourage T-shirts even in winter and short fingernails.  Have the girls bring
cameras if they have them.  Great photo opportunity.

5.
Silver clay jewelry:  Appropriate for Juniors, Cadets and Seniors.  Make stamped silver
clay jewelry.  Silver clay (PMC) is microscopic silver in an organic binder.  The girls make
jewelry, we fire it, and they wear it.  Cost: $20 for one pendant.  A leather cord, pendant
and gold colored jewelry box is $25.   Time: one meeting of 2 hours.  We need the entire 2
hours to finish the project, but there are two 20 minute breaks to be used for your snack
and/or meeting.  Some troops have brought in string bracelets to start and finish later at
another meeting.  Pieces are taken home that day.
We will be discontinuing silver clay in February 2010.

Junior Girl Scouts and the Pottery Badge:

The project we make is a wall vase, and we LOVE it because it is so simple, unique and
successful.  The cost is $15 per person making the project, or $20 if you also choose to keep a
pinch pot that is made the same class period.

The cost per child of $15, includes instruction for the wall vase, one pound of clay, firing and
glazing.   Two meetings, spaced two weeks or more apart are necessary to complete the project,
and we can accommodate up to 20 children in one session.  If you have a small troop, you may
invite siblings to participate also, at a cost of $15 per project.  I am now giving troops the option
of keeping the pinch pots we make during the class.  Before, we have not kept the pinch pots,
as it is too expensive to for me to do two projects for $15, and I wanted to keep the cost to $15
per girl.  However, some troops have asked about keeping both the wall vase and the pinch pot,
and we can do that for $20 a person.

Time to meet for first meeting is usually 90 minutes (60 minutes project, 15 minutes tour and
questions, 15 minute snack).  If you ask in advance for a wheel demonstration to your troop, we
can also do that; but please ask in advance, as not all instructors at Fired Up know how to use
the wheel proficiently, and we would like you to have one that is.

BROWNIES
We find that with Brownies, they want to come and paint pottery or make an item in clay!   We will
work with the troop leader to help set the right budget for your troop.  Pottery painting pieces
range from $5 and up, but most troops paint pieces in the $15 to $25 dollar range  Coin banks
and pottery boxes are often in the $20 to $25 range, while cups and bowls are $18 to $20, and
small vases, tiles and figurines are usually around $15.  If at all possible, troops come to Fired
Up at their normal meeting time, so you don't have to rearrange schedules.  Pottery painting
take 1 meeting of an hour.

If troops want to make item in clay, great ideas are garden stakes, small mirrors or  name
plaques.  Cost is $15 per girl, and two meetings are required, spaced 2 weeks apart.

Juniors, Cadets, Seniors and wheel classes:
We have been offering wheel classes for smaller troops.  The  cost of $30 per girl includes two
meetings, clay, glazing, firing and instruction.   We have 4 wheels.  The wheel class is a longer
meeting, usually 1.5 hours, and the glazing requires 1 hour.   Troops come back in 2 weeks to
glaze the pottery.  The cost includes both meetings.

SUPERVISION
We ask that the troop have one parent or other adult for every five to six children.  This helps
the troop stay on time, and keeps everyone finishing at about the same time.  Troops should
allow one hour if only making the clay project, and add a 15 minutes each for the business
meeting or tour.  Keeping both the pinch pot and the wall vase requires no extra time.

GLAZING
The troop returns for a second visit at least two weeks after the first visit to finish the piece by
glazing.  Allow one hour for this meeting.  Children who miss the first meeting can choose from
wall vases we have on hand just for this reason.  Wall vases made at the first meeting, and not
glazed because of absence at the second meeting are wrapped up with a note saying they are
prepaid, and to please come back and finish the project at no charge.

PICK UP
The finished pieces are individually wrapped and picked up by one person, usually 7 to 9 days
after the second meeting, but we can meet tighter time frames upon special request.
